Collect Offering

Offering

$2,100.00

2023, Steel, vegetable papyrus from onions, wire, beads, metallic leaf, glitter glue, 63 x 24.5 x 12”.

Offering is a waterfall of tears, akin to May Boatright’s wall behind her house in Sue Monk Kidd’s novel, The Secret Life of Bees. August and June, her sisters, have constructed a wailing wall like the one in Jerusalem in their back yard. It is where May fills slips of paper and places in between the stones whenever she hears a sad story.

Here, vegetable papyrus paper is made from onions that are cooked, sliced, pressed, and dried, adorned with beads, metal leafing, and glitter glue embodying cooking, creating, and often, crying. These delicate, dangling tears are evocative of the flowers, candles, photos, and other ephemera that are often left at an altar or memorial site.
