Back to Portfolio -- Body as an Open Book

This work is a visceral response to a diagnosis of, and surgery for breast cancer. My physical landscape has been excavated, shifted, and reconstructed. The raw photographic images of my body’s topography are the foundations of this work. Digitally enhanced prints of these photographs, printmaking, encaustic, collage, handmade paper and text are layered together.

The circular mixed media pieces are encaustic and collage on cut off tree limbs which show their own unique signs of age and trauma. Working in this circular format references targets, breasts, and cells. Detached and isolated, they are about amputation, loss, and resurrection. Fabric, found objects, and other collaged elements revitalize these castaways. Materials serve as metaphors for feelings and experience.
